For the French Grand Prix, BMW Sauber F1 Team reserve driver Sebastian Vettel did not get a 2nd opportunity to replace Robert Kubica, who crashed spectacularly a couple of weeks ago in the Canadian Grand Prix but has returned to good form. We were wondering for a while if he would have the chance to substitute for Nick Heidfeld, who bruised his back during a recent practice session & missed some subsequent practice runs. Nick & Robert both easily made it through the 1st knock-out qualifying session. Robert was 4th in Q2, followed by World Champion Fernando Alonzo in a McLaren in 5th & Nick in 6th. Q3 ensured that Robert would start the race in 4th while Nick would start 3 back & Fernando back 3 more. Nick moved up to 6th on the 1st lap, but a display of phenomenal driving prowess permitted the World Champion to pass him halfway through the race – depriving Nick of the distinction of being the only F1 driver never passed this season. Nick was subsequently able to regain & hold 5th (just behind his teammate) through the end of the race, while Alonzo finished 7th. Rookie McLaren driver Louis Hamilton made history by finishing on the podium for his 1st 8 F1 races, this week just behind the Ferraris. Former BMW.WilliamsF1 Team driver Jenson Button (in a Honda) scored his 1st c’ship point of the season. Former BMW.WilliamsF1 Team driver Ralf Schumacher (who has seen little success since he had BMW power) came 10th in his Toyota (not high enough to increase his point total of 2), just behind former BMW.WilliamsF1 Team test driver Nico Rosberg (in a Williams-Toyota), who has 5 points. Former BMW.WilliamsF1 Team driver Mark Webber (with 2 points this year) ended the day in 12th in a Red Bull-Renault, 1 place ahead of his teammate, former WilliamsF1 driver David Coulthard (with 4 c’ship points this year). Nick & Robert now have 30 & 17 points respectively. Robert’s crash occurred while he still held a solid point-paying position in the Canadian race & prevented him from competing for points in the subsequent US Grand Prix. See rebroadcast on Speed Friday afternoon. British Grand Prix this weekend looks even more promising. See practice & qualifying on Speed Friday & Saturday mornings, followed by the race on Fox Sunday pm.

BMW Sauber F1 Team test driver Timo Glock has a 2nd job: He competes in the GP2 racing series. At the start of this weekend’s GP2 race in France, he was pole-sitter, but went flying after colliding with his teammate. On the same lap, another driver flipped into the air, landed on top of a concrete wall (just missing 3 race marshals), & slid upside down along the wall for ages. Moments later, another driver ran over a member of his pit crew. More excitement than any of them wanted.

German newspaper Bild (formerly Bild-Zeitung) reports BMW Sauber F1 Team driver Nick Heidfeld has renewed his contract for 2 years & will again co-drive with Robert Kubica. The paper also claims that the team will loan test driver Sebastian Vettel to Red Bull-Renault to give him race experience. http://formula-1.updatesport.com/news/article/1183452942/formula_one/F1gossip/Heidfeld-signs-new-BMW-contract-/view.html and http://www.bild.t-online.de/BTO/sport/2007/03/04/heidfeld-nick-outfit/weltmeister-wunsch.html

BMW is touting the 2008 1-Series Coupe as the reinvention of the niche created by the legendary BMW 2002. The 2002 was an inexpensive, fun, agile, quick little bugger compared to most other cars back in the day. The $26k 128i squeezes 230 horses & 200 lb-ft of torque from its delicious 3-liter 6-banger. We predict 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds. The $31k 135i has the 335i’s silky twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower & an incredible 300 lb-ft of torque from as low as 1,400 rpm, pushing the 135i from 0 to 62 mph in 5.3 secs with top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. Speaking of quick little buggers. http://www.automobilemag.com/new_and_future_cars/2008/0706_2008_bmw_1_series/

Vote now: Can BMW’s 135i fill the role of the original M3? a. For sure! b. Not with those turbos; c. Not at all. http://www.autoweek.com/
